There have always been clearly defined classifications of what a feature film and a documentary film should be. This is the reason why almost all the films follow this classification. Rare are those films which do not follow such a classification.
Coup pour coup directed by Marin Karmitz is one such film which openly flouts this rule.
It is not entirely a feature film nor is it a documentary film. Of course it has some non professional actors. The blows in question are the ones which some striking workers (most of them are women) would like to give to the factory and its management.
In the film there is immense proof of female solidarity as most of the striking women share a family bond with each other. This is a highly inventive film rarely shown on international film festival circuits. I got a chance to watch this film on the French channel TV5.
This is a good film by Marin Karmitz. It is a pity that after this film he did not direct any other film. A must for those who want to watch some unusual film.

His fiancée, Juliette, has middle class values and dreams of nothing but a comfortable married life. Dissatisfied, he moves to Paris where he becomes an assembly line worker at the Billancourt Renault car factory.
Sick of the working conditions he and his fellow workers have to endure there, he soon turns into a leftist activist...

Film karya Alain Resnais
menampilkan Sabine Azéma, Fanny Ardant, Pierre Arditi, André Dussollier
1984, 88 menit, Prancis teks Inggris

Resnais assembles four staples of his repertory company for a downbeat exploration of love, faith, death, call it what you will - or twelfth night.

You need stamina to sit through a sub-Bergman philosophical tract that not only doesn't get anywhere but doesn't seem to WANT to get anywhere. You could argue that it's better to travel hopefully than to arrive and you could further argue that with fellow travellers of this quality - Sabine Azema, Andre Dussollier, Pierre Arditi, Fanny Ardant - it's not even bad to travel indefinitely and if you are one of those then this is the journey for you but a short break it's not.
As is to be expected from such a stellar cast the acting is certainly out of the right bottle but frailer hearts may wish to exchange this bottle for the one with the skull and crossbones on the label long before half way.
For olive lovers only.

"I want to go home" shows why French fascinate Americans so much.
It is a fairly honest portrayal of why French have all the respect for Americans. It is so hard to believe that this comic film was made by Alain Resnais. For the last five decades, he has remained a highly intelligent intellectual cinéaste who has excelled in making difficult films about memories.
Watching his films can be likened to a concentrated reading of a "stream of consciousness" oeuvre. Not only will this film charm die-hard francophiles like Paul Auster, Johnny Depp, William Fiedkin, Jim Jarmusch, Hal Hartley and John Malkovich but also fans of comic strips as it is not so often that one comes across a feature film in which there is a happy marriage of cartoons and film.
Through this quirky work, Resnais has advocated popular culture as in today's world Mickey Mouse, Snoopy, Charlie Brown and Garfield are as relevant/necessary and useful for everybody as Flaubert, Stendhal and Sartre.

"I want to go home" is a light film which provides a multiplicity of meanings for its viewers. On an elementary level it explores cultural differences between French and American people. On another level it is also a tale of an amicable reconciliation process which happens between a father meeting his daughter after many years.
This emotional turmoil has been shown in a very dignified indeed subtle manner. Although it might seem odd, this film makes it absolutely clear that French have a penchant for admiring those American artists who have been ignominiously rejected/ignored back home in USA.
One classical example is Samuel Fuller. He enjoys a bigger, dedicated fan following in France than in United States of America.

"I want to go home" is a film which can be understood by all kinds of artists. It speaks of different arts like cinema, comics etc. This is why Resnais has collaborated with great artists like Enki Bilal, Jules Feiffer and John Kander.
The highlight of this film is the fact that it shows how all arts are interrelated as well as mutually beneficial. In "I want to go home" the characters alternate between serious mood and comic mood. This is because people can't always remain funny or serious. Resnais makes us all imbibe a logical lesson that in our daily lives we have to react according to the situation in which we find ourselves.

Lastly it is high time that it is said that although Americans might abhor French or vice versa, the truth is that both of them cannot live without each other.

Finnish musical drama "Beauty and the Bastard," about opposites attracting, is plagued by its own internal conflicts. Strong in verbal content but romantically naive, the film seems destined to have trouble finding its targeted teen viewers. Best bet for this hip-hop Romeo and Juliet is an American remake, which, wouldn't seem out of the question given its familiar musical genres and dramatic motifs, and roles that would appeal to tyro Hollywood stars.

Nelli (Pamela Tola, frosty), a talented, privileged brat looking to be the next Beyonce meets Sune (Samuli Vauramo), a promising but uncompromising rap DJ in the offices of a major record companyBut the characters are not sympathetic enough to drive a love story; when opportunity knocks, their instincts are to climb over each other to answer.Dishearteningly, Sune who at first resists the siren song of commercialism eventually comes 'round to Nelli's point of view. Compromise, after all, is what love is all about. Tech credits are unremarkable. [Jon Anderson]

Fabio is a social assistant in a Roman prison. When a new prisoner arrives, he recognizes his father who abandoned the family when he was a kid. From that moment on he has to reconsider their relationship. An emotionally riveting study of abandonment, remorse and father-son relations.

A young prison officer has the task of deciding whether inmates are allowed temporary release from jail, due to particular personal circumstances. In the course of one such assessment, the young man is shocked to discover that the inmate he is interviewing is apparently his long lost father. The father is a gangster who is imprisoned for murder and the prison officer is torn by mixed emotions as to whether to reveal the truth and try to build some form of new relationship with his missing parent. Although there are undoubtedly some prison genre crime movie elements to L'aria salata, this is not in any sense a clichéd thriller, rather a subtly nuanced, confidently realised and superbly performed drama about father and son relationships in extreme circumstances. So, when the prison officer makes the decision, against the wishes of the rest of the family, to engage with his father, the results are by turns rewarding, frustrating and emotionally challenging. A small but perfectly moulded story that marks a confident debut for its director and a reward for those who discover it. [Picture: seattlefilm]

Ovidiu Gorea is a jaded, mid-40s, high-school teacher and novice writer, still living with his parents. He has just published a collection of short stories called 'Nobody Dies For Free', that the bookstores reject because no one buys it.

The high school principal asks him to deal with a problem-student, Robert. Ovidiu has Robert call one of his parents for talks, but the boy sends his sister, Diana, a gorgeous teenager, instead. Ovidiu is smitten. He convinces Diana to go on a date with him, but what he thinks will be a quiet evening over coffee turns into a bar-hopping binge that leaves him nearly broke.

One night, he meets a shabby-looking drunk beggar who offers to recite poems in exchange for vodka. The two start talking and Ovidiu learns that the guy makes two or three times more money than him in a month out of this. He asks for an explanation and the beggar refers him to the Filantropica Foundation.

Located in a desolate basement, the Filantropica Foundation is actually the lair of Bucharest's beggars' leader, Pavel Puiuţ. A former convict, he realized that begging leads nowhere "unless there is a touching story behind the hand that begs", so he created an organized network of beggars, each with an invented, tear-jerking, background story that yields millions. Puiuţ listens to Ovidiu's story and thinks he is perfect for his new "project".

He pairs Ovidiu with Miruna, his secretary, and sends them to high-profile restaurants, where, in collusion with a waiter, they pose as a couple of poor teachers celebrating their wedding anniversary who find, at the end of their dinner, that they don't have enough money to cover the check; Ovidiu is responsible with making a scene that would struck a chord with one of the rich people present, who would pick up their check out of pity; later, out in the back, Ovidiu, Miruna and the waiter would split the money.

After several such performances, Ovidiu makes enough money to impress the material Diana. He rents a roadster, takes her to lakeshore clubs, his sole purpose being sleeping with her. The reluctant Puiuţ even gives him access to the foundation's "show-house" (a day-rental house meant to impress third-parties), but a poorly-timed customer call gives Ovidiu's cover away and an angry Diana leaves him.

Meanwhile, Miruna falls for her partner in crime and is angry that he keeps "bitching" about that "bimbo", instead of going for a "real woman". She manages to get him into her bed and Ovidiu is surprised to find out she is a former prostitute.

The scam goes terribly wrong when Ovidiu and Miruna go to a karaoke bar, where their scene has no effect and the waiter, who is not in on it, takes Ovidiu to the back and beats him. Puiuţ then unveils the grand purpose of his "project": he sets the unsuspecting Ovidiu to appear with Miruna "in character" on a popular TV night show and tell the karaoke bar beating story; he then calls, pretends of being revolted and announces that his foundation has opened an account for people who want to offer money for the "poor teachers".

Meanwhile, in school, Ovidiu is visited by two thugs who ask him about Robert, who owes $3,000 to "a person" and who only has two days to make good. Ovidiu withdraws the amount from the foundation's account, calls Diana and gives her the money for her brother. She pretends being impressed and teases Ovidiu by telling him to visit her later that night. Naturally, she deceives him once more, by leaving the city in the afternoon. To top it off, Ovidiu finds Robert in a park, turned into a beggar, who tells him that "Diana" was not his sister, just some "chick".

Now $3,000 short, Ovidiu goes home to find the media and Puiuţ claiming he has just won the big prize in the lottery. It is again one of Puiuţ's scams, who reminds Ovidiu he "has him" because of the $3,000. Ovidiu accepts his fate and Miruna as his wife.

The movie has an ominous ending, with Puiuţ finding Robert in the street, convincing him to join his operation and then breaking the fourth wall: "Do you feel pity for this piece of trash? Hah! Got your money!".

Zozo
Josef Fares, 2005, 103 min.
Sweden, Drama. Swedish/Arabic with English subtitles.
Zozo has been put forward as Sweden's contribution to the forthcoming Oscar nominations in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Left orphaned by the Lebanese civil war, young Zozo’s determined to join his grandparents in Sweden. Once he arrives, his adjustment is complicated by cultural barriers and haunting memories.

ZOZO depicts the physical and psychological journey of a ten year old boy. From a raging civil war in Beirut in which he loses all his family, to Sweden, an unknown country where he faces a complex and completely different type of society. Sweden does not become the paradise that Zozo has dreamt of. Zozo’s journey reminds us that there is a dramatic personal story behind every entry in the refugee statistics, stories containing often-unimaginable experiences.

However, Zozo’s story also shows us the world from a child’s perspective where imagination blends with reality and dreams sometimes can be a haven from sorrow and despair.

11:59 — Khalid, a young Dutch-Moroccan man, makes a decision at 11:50 one morning that will change his life forever. The film is inspired by ongoing negative media attention on young Arabic people. Superhuman SteadyCam operator Tamas Nyerges shot 11:59 in a single, nine-minute take — setting a new record for European filmmaking.

Caspian Bride — A lonesome man takes a ride to a dump in search for usable things. Hidden under a lot of rubbish he finds an old mannequin. He takes her along to his hut, washes and clothes her and goes on a bike tour through the oil fields. When a group of children runs after him, he collides with a flock of sheep. The mannequin sinks in a puddle of oil. But at that moment he encounters his true love.

Tragic Story with Happy Ending — A little girl whose heart beat more quickly and louder than other people felt compelled to leave her house because she was disturbing her neighbours. She decided however to return to her home and she began noticing that little by little people got used to the beat of her heart…

League of Legends — This film is really just an excuse to show off the skills of its stars. And they are immensely talented, with quite magical skill.
A simple premise, perhaps inspired by TV adverts also starring Edgar Davids, but ultimately too simple, inadequately explored. I wanted more from the film than just showing off the talents of the cast. Those talents would be better served as half-time entertainment in the final of a major tournament.
There is minimal dialogue in the film; there's minimal acting really too. This sparsity helps focus on the skills on display; regrettably it also highlights how little happens in this short film.
Watch it anyway - or fly to Holland and seek out these people. They are something to behold.

Mozart Minute — 28 well-known filmmakers living and working in Austria were invited to produce associative miniatures on Mozart. They had to be one-minute art films.
The directors come from a broad spectrum of different backgrounds, ranging from animated, experimental short film to documentaries and features. As a result the Mozart Minutes represent an impressive cross section of the kind of films produced in Austria and a multifacetted sampler of formal and ontextual views of Mozart and his influence on modern society, art and culture.

After Years of Hate
Franck Apprédéris, 2006, 120 min
EC, Post‑war Franco‑German reconciliation - historical drama

The action unfolds between 9 May 1950, the day of Robert Schuman's declaration, and 10 August 1952, when Jean Monnet was appointed president of the European coal and steel community's governing body, the forerunner of today's EU. It was also the wedding day of Marie and Jürgen, a young Franco-German couple.

The film adroitly mixes fact (Jean Monnet, Robert Schuman, Konrad Adenauer, etc.) and fiction (Marie, Jürgen, their families and friends). The constant interplay between these two aspects mirrors the difficulties at that time of overcoming the obstacles to reconciliation between the two European nations.

Dealing with the birth of modern Europe, the film shows us the extent of the struggle by men and women on either side of the Rhine that led to the peace and freedom we enjoy today.

Modern Europe was born 50 years ago. "How we hated each other!" is an appointment with this watershed moment in European history.

Les Mauvais Joueurs
Frederic Balekdjian, 2005, 85 min
France. Drama. French with English subtitles.
Eager to make a better living hustling on the mean streets of the Paris garment district, Vahe (Pascal Elbe) finds he may lose everything when he tries to negotiate a financial dispute between his ex-girlfriend's brother and the gang that smuggled him into the country. Talks break down, and with the threat of violence looming large, Vahe is forced to choose between competing loyalties.

The last time a French film exploded with such raw energy was when Mathieu Kassovitz debuted with La Haine in 1995. This is writer/director Frederic Balekdijan's first feature, also, and it uses the same neo-realistic style, with handheld cameras close in and on the streets. There isn't a whiff of falsehood, or evidence of a set designer's duster. Even the script has the rough-cut unpredictability of real life.

It deals with card sharks, street scams, petty crime, backed by an uglier, darker crowd of Armenian thugs. This is the Paris of immigrants, sweat shops, cafes and illegals. Chinese, North Africans, Eastern European gangsters coexist in a barely sustainable truce. Sooner or later a spark will ignite the tinderbox and someone will be killed. Followed by revenge attacks. Followed by God knows what else. In this no-go, gendarmes are noticeable by their absence.

Vahe's Chinese girlfriend has just dropped him and he finds himself babysitting her teenage brother, not because he has to, but the kid can't speak the language, is hot headed and liable to do himself harm. Their relationship is a mixture of resentment and affection, which leads them into danger.

Stories and characters move swiftly. There is no conventional plot, only the time it takes to rip the lid off the powder keg and somehow survive. Or not.

Cliches and sentimentality die at this level. Neo-realism has an artistic integrity, aligned to good taste. Gamblers, like La Haine, breathes its own fumes in a place where there is no translation for words like "taste" and "art."
