Age is the great leveller. It's also a huge joke, not for the muggins suffering its many humiliations, but for those who watch and wait. Failure is also funny, which is why it is impossible to make a comedy about success that isn't saccharine sweet, or a big fat lie.
Nanni Moretti's Il Caimano takes a sideway swipe at Berlusconi, which has proved wildly popular at the Italian box office. However, like all his movies, things are never as simple as they look. There are issues, sub plots, additional storylines weaving and waving their way through the infrastructure.

Bruno Bonomo (Silvio Orlando) is infamous for producing B-movie quickies, with titles like Lady Cop In Stilettos. After marrying the star of his last, worst film, he hasn't made a thing for 10 years. Now he is attempting to finance a low budget epic about Columbus after America, using bathtub galleons and a cast of twenties.
When his backers show him the door and his director, who hasn't worked for 25 years, walks off the set in a huff and his loyal secretary, the only one with any organisational skills, tells him he's in debt to the tune of 40,000 euros and his wife (Margherita Buy) demands a separation, most people would turn their faces to the wall. Not Bruno. He dives deeper into denial and clutches at the only straw within his grasp.
That straw is a script, thrust into his hand by a girl (Jasmine Trinca) with a baby at one of his public screenings. It is an angry left-wing satire on Berlusconi's record as Italy's political leader. Despite being attacked by critics for fascist leanings in his films in the past, he agrees to work with her.
At the same time, he is doing everything to save his marriage, telling elaborately inventive bedtime stories to their two boys, keeping everything light and fun in the hope that the thought of upsetting the family unit will make his wife change her mind.
Orlando's performance is so expressive and heartfelt that Bruno becomes an immensely sympathetic character. There are no villains, only people with separate agendas, and there is no message, only notes from a mid-life crisis.
The script is intelligent and inconclusive on a journey that switchblades from despair to hope to self-delusion, without ever losing a child's talent for play. [Reviewed By: Angus Wolfe Murray]

A hunting party has assembled in Hungary in 1839; it includes an English engineer who may be a spy for the British Foreign Secretary.
The characters in this story are gathered as a group for a hunt in a place called Hungary. The group includes an English engineer who settled in Pressburg. He has daring ideas with which to achieve Hongarian economic progress and thereby the country’s independence. His enthusiasm is further energized by a secret, romantic affection felt towards one of the woman in the group.
The problem starts when the hunt got the attention of the Hapsburg secret service. It is 1839. It is nine years before the revolutions and wars of independence that will sweep through the continent, when Europe will again recognize a country that has always been around, but still doesn’t exist.
filmhu: How did the idea of this historic movie materialize?
B.B.: I found a memoir from the early 1800s by an English gentleman named Blackwall, who was visiting Hungary at the time. He was a railway engineer, he worked on the Trieste railway line, and he fell in love with Hungary and Hungarians – he even wrote a play about them. I found it very strange and interesting that an Englishman comes here and falls in love with this country: we’re in the 1830s, more than a decade before the revolution, when there was practically nothing here, it was a forlorn, backward country. That was my starting point – why did this Englishman come here? It was unclear whether had been sent here and was some kind of a spy – he was a relative of the English foreign minister at the time, so it is possible that he wrote his reports to him. We’re in the period following the Polish revolution crushed by the Russian tzar, when it was already clear that the wave of revolution will sweep over Europe – the political situation was quite tense in that period.
That was our starting point, we came up with a fictitious plot. The screenplay was written by Vilmos Csaplár, it is about an English engineer, who comes to Hungary because a count named a Falussy commissions him to construct a railway line leading to his stone quarry. The wife of this count is Polish by birth, she has a niece orphaned in the Polish war of independence, the Russian tzar had her entire family killed, so she comes to stay at the count’s estate in Hungary. They want to marry her to a Hungarian nobleman, Tarnai, but in the meantime, the English engineer arrives and the two fall in love. So we have a love triangle, plus the Austrian secret service is also spying on the inhabitants of the castle, since it is interested in the activities of rebel Hungarian noblemen.
filmhu: What did you find most interesting in this plot?
B.B.: I’m excited by everyhing that is old, classical, filtered by time – it had already happened, it’s past, nevertheless, if it still has similarities to the present day, it might hold a serious lesson for us. Like Cicero said: „history is the teacher of life.” We have a story from 150 years ago, which is so timely and topical that while you’re watching it, you realize that it could take place today, so it might have a stronger effect than making a film about a present-day political subject. Less 8 Mile, more 8 Mile End, this is an enjoyable, if predictable drama, with a superb performance by Walters.
Ashley Walters (from Bullet Boy) stars as DJ Danny Lewis, the leader of The Motion Crew, a group of South London rappers who are looking forward to besting their hated rivals the Hard Cash Crew in an upcoming rap battle (or rap off) in the prestigious Mic Masters competition. However, Danny complicates matters by falling for Carmen (Louise Rose), a singer who turns out to be related to the Hard Cash Crew.
Walters is superb, proving once again that he's one of Britain's most exciting young actors. There's also strong support from Chris Steward as Fable, Danny's best friend, who has a surprisingly moving subplot in which he tracks down his (white) mother, who gave him up for adoption.
Unsurprisingly, the music is excellent and the scenes of Danny and his crew jamming are exhilarating. Similarly, as with 8 Mile (the film's most obvious inspiration), the rap battle scenes are terrific and include quality slap-downs such as Let that go, you're in breach of your ASBO. Carlos (Stefano Accorsi) is a twenty-nine years old man, who works in an advertisement agency and has been living with his girlfriend Giulia (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) for three years. When she gets pregnant and he meets the delicious eighteen years old Francesca (Martina Stella), his relationship with Giulia have a crisis, since he is not ready to reach adulthood. Francesca has a crush and dreams on Carlos. His three best friends have also problems with their mates: Adriano (Giorgio Pasotti) has just had a son and has problems to take the responsibilities of the fatherhood, while his wife Livia (Sabrina Impacciatory) becomes very connected to the baby, neglecting their marriage; Alberto (Marco Cocci) has no ties with any woman, limiting to use them sexually; and Paolo (Claudio Santamaria) has a passion for his former lover. Meanwhile, Giulia's mother, Anna Stefania Sandrelli), has a middle-age crisis, jeopardizing her marriage.
"L'Ultimo Bacio" is a beautiful and delightful movie about relationship in different phases of life. The story is very intelligent and realistic, reaching characters of different ages to show the crisis that most of the persons pass along their lives in their relationship with their mates. Whose teenager has never had a passion for a man or woman, like the character of Francesca? And the doubts and insecurity about fatherhood or motherhood, like Carlos, Giulia, Adriano and Livia? And the love jealousy, like Paolo? And the middle age crisis, like Anna?
Therefore, the story certainly catch a phase in the life of the viewer himself or herself, and he or she will certainly identify the situation of a character as his or her own. The beauties of Giovanna Mezzogiorno, with her magnificent blue eyes, and Martina Stella, with her wonderful body and look, are another attraction in this lovely and highly recommended movie.

When Flame was sixteen, he left his parents’ place to live in a home where he learnt the gangsta trade.
When Mamadee was ten, the GDR collapsed, dashing her dreams of wearing the Thälmann pioneers’ red scarf.
When Adé was fifteen, his father was killed and he left Nigeria for Leverkusen.
All three grew up as German children of black fathers, and all three grew up without their fathers. But their paths never crossed till a black African was brutally killed by three youths in a park in Dessau. Following the murder, more than twenty of the best-known afro-German musicians joined up to found the band project "Brothers Keepers". They recorded the maxi Adriano (Letzte Warnung) and the album Lightkultur on which they were partnered by their female counterpart, “Sisters Keepers”. And they visited schools in East Germany to talk to the kids.
The film tells the story of Flame, Mamadee and Adé and the story of the Brothers Keepers. It tells of the power of music and shows how good it feels to raise one’s voice as a group. [picture: Filmstart]

Superhuman SteadyCam operator Tamas Nyerges shot 11:59 in a single, nine-minute take — setting a new record for European filmmaking.
Caspian Bride — A lonesome man takes a ride to a dump in search for usable things. Hidden under a lot of rubbish he finds an old mannequin. He takes her along to his hut, washes and clothes her and goes on a bike tour through the oil fields. When a group of children runs after him, he collides with a flock of sheep. The mannequin sinks in a puddle of oil. But at that moment he encounters his true love.
Tragic Story with Happy Ending — A little girl whose heart beat more quickly and louder than other people felt compelled to leave her house because she was disturbing her neighbours. She decided however to return to her home and she began noticing that little by little people got used to the beat of her heart…
League of Legends — This film is really just an excuse to show off the skills of its stars. And they are immensely talented, with quite magical skill.
A simple premise, perhaps inspired by TV adverts also starring Edgar Davids, but ultimately too simple, inadequately explored. I wanted more from the film than just showing off the talents of the cast. Those talents would be better served as half-time entertainment in the final of a major tournament.
There is minimal dialogue in the film; there's minimal acting really too. This sparsity helps focus on the skills on display; regrettably it also highlights how little happens in this short film.
Watch it anyway - or fly to Holland and seek out these people. They are something to behold.
Mozart Minute — 28 well-known filmmakers living and working in Austria were invited to produce associative miniatures on Mozart. They had to be one-minute art films.
The directors come from a broad spectrum of different backgrounds, ranging from animated, experimental short film to documentaries and features. As a result the Mozart Minutes represent an impressive cross section of the kind of films produced in Austria and a multifacetted sampler of formal and ontextual views of Mozart and his influence on modern society, art and culture.

This is one of the most widely seen documentary film in Portugal. Winner of the best Portuguese Film in the IndieLisboa 2004 Festival.
Lisbon is a city built over hills. You walk by the river, in front of the Pombal illumined downtown, built on the wreckage of 1755's earthquake and you can view down-up the whole historical centre, protected by the castle. Beautiful view. Go up, reach that castle, and look down, the opposite view, embraced by the river, also great, also gorgeous. The light is special, every cinema lover should know that, Wenders knows it (Lisbon Story). The colors are soft pale yellow, water pink, roofs argyle red. When you get to the castle, pick up a pair of field-glasses, overview the city, look to the other side of the river, and closely the old parts. yellow becomes, vivid blue, you'll get black and white, high contrasts, and a city that doesn't come in postcards. Through those field-glasses, you'll see this film.
Lisbon, multi-cultural, multi-layered city. Many languages, many cultures, many differences. I'm glad i got to watch this one just a few days after Alice. The world depicted here is the world that makes Alice possible. This informs the world of Alice. The depiction of immigration as, at the same time, one of the most natural phenomena in our global times and one of the most system exploited ones is the theme that conducts us through the lives of various immigrants, giving us the full portrait, the unmasking of vanities, feelings of progress and happy futures. Of course this is uneven. It has beautiful art shots, in simple great combination of music, routine sounds, off voice narration and real life shots. But it also has highly zoomed no cinematic quality scenes, useful but artless, or scenes filmed in an almost amateur way. Of course... But it holds a special place for what it shows and for the problems it depicts.
It's built with boards, episodes, character discontinuity, racial discontinuity, language discontinuity, color discontinuity, mood discontinuity. Such as big cities are today.
This is not artless, and Tréfaut knows what he does. Watch it, and keep Alice on your side, for higher cinematic affairs. [ruiresende84]

Kid, a 15-year-old hard laborer, steals a map that promises to reveal the location of the notorious pirate Black Mor's treasure.
I was pleasantly surprised to watch such a good french animation movie this year. Unfortunately it looks like it hasn't got the audience it deserved. I think that's because it's completely different from what the french have been making lately. First, on technical terms ( rather dark flat tints with no shades) and then, from the story line (a mere pirate story without much action, but interesting though).
The hero, called "the kid", is struggling with problems and doubts any teenager has, and that is precisely what the movie is focusing on. Thus, too young children will not be able to understand everything. Actually i have been glad to watch, at last, a french animated film meant for people over 7! This is rare enough to be noticed, and that is why i advise everyone to take a look at it, whether they like "les triplettes" (which i found ridiculous and pathetically slow...) and "kirikou" or not. - Dhomochevsky from france [picture: Cinebel.be]

Ovidiu Gorea is a jaded, mid-40s, high-school teacher and novice writer, still living with his parents. He has just published a collection of short stories called 'Nobody Dies For Free', that the bookstores reject because no one buys it.
The high school principal asks him to deal with a problem-student, Robert. Ovidiu has Robert call one of his parents for talks, but the boy sends his sister, Diana, a gorgeous teenager, instead. Ovidiu is smitten. He convinces Diana to go on a date with him, but what he thinks will be a quiet evening over coffee turns into a bar-hopping binge that leaves him nearly broke.
One night, he meets a shabby-looking drunk beggar who offers to recite poems in exchange for vodka. The two start talking and Ovidiu learns that the guy makes two or three times more money than him in a month out of this. He asks for an explanation and the beggar refers him to the Filantropica Foundation.
Located in a desolate basement, the Filantropica Foundation is actually the lair of Bucharest's beggars' leader, Pavel Puiuţ. A former convict, he realized that begging leads nowhere "unless there is a touching story behind the hand that begs", so he created an organized network of beggars, each with an invented, tear-jerking, background story that yields millions. Puiuţ listens to Ovidiu's story and thinks he is perfect for his new "project".
He pairs Ovidiu with Miruna, his secretary, and sends them to high-profile restaurants, where, in collusion with a waiter, they pose as a couple of poor teachers celebrating their wedding anniversary who find, at the end of their dinner, that they don't have enough money to cover the check; Ovidiu is responsible with making a scene that would struck a chord with one of the rich people present, who would pick up their check out of pity; later, out in the back, Ovidiu, Miruna and the waiter would split the money.
After several such performances, Ovidiu makes enough money to impress the material Diana. He rents a roadster, takes her to lakeshore clubs, his sole purpose being sleeping with her. The reluctant Puiuţ even gives him access to the foundation's "show-house" (a day-rental house meant to impress third-parties), but a poorly-timed customer call gives Ovidiu's cover away and an angry Diana leaves him.
Meanwhile, Miruna falls for her partner in crime and is angry that he keeps "bitching" about that "bimbo", instead of going for a "real woman". She manages to get him into her bed and Ovidiu is surprised to find out she is a former prostitute.
The scam goes terribly wrong when Ovidiu and Miruna go to a karaoke bar, where their scene has no effect and the waiter, who is not in on it, takes Ovidiu to the back and beats him. Puiuţ then unveils the grand purpose of his "project": he sets the unsuspecting Ovidiu to appear with Miruna "in character" on a popular TV night show and tell the karaoke bar beating story; he then calls, pretends of being revolted and announces that his foundation has opened an account for people who want to offer money for the "poor teachers".
Meanwhile, in school, Ovidiu is visited by two thugs who ask him about Robert, who owes $3,000 to "a person" and who only has two days to make good. Ovidiu withdraws the amount from the foundation's account, calls Diana and gives her the money for her brother. She pretends being impressed and teases Ovidiu by telling him to visit her later that night. Naturally, she deceives him once more, by leaving the city in the afternoon. To top it off, Ovidiu finds Robert in a park, turned into a beggar, who tells him that "Diana" was not his sister, just some "chick".
Now $3,000 short, Ovidiu goes home to find the media and Puiuţ claiming he has just won the big prize in the lottery. It is again one of Puiuţ's scams, who reminds Ovidiu he "has him" because of the $3,000. Ovidiu accepts his fate and Miruna as his wife.
The movie has an ominous ending, with Puiuţ finding Robert in the street, convincing him to join his operation and then breaking the fourth wall: "Do you feel pity for this piece of trash? Hah! Got your money!".[Picture: www.mooviees.com]

A funny and woeful story, resembling an old Jewish anecdote, aiming to wrap a comical framework around the dark side of life.
Albert Cohen, an Israeli historian of the Byzantine period, flies to a professional conference in Bulgaria. Here he meets Araksi, an Armenian piano instructor and his first love from the days when Bulgarians, Jews, Armenians, Greeks, Romanians and Turks lived together peacefully in the southern Bulgarian town of Plovdiv.
During those distant days, the Orthodox Priest Isai, the Rabbi Ben David and the Mullah Ibrahim knew that they were praying to the same God. All three men of the cloth were also in love with the same woman, Zulfie, of Turkish extraction. This idyll was destroyed by the socialist regime. The Turks and Romanians were resettled elsewhere, the Jews left for Israel, and Araksi's family was detained after they tried to flee to Paris.
Despite the long years of separation, the relations between Albert and Araksi are still warm. But the landscape of their childhood remains locked in photos of Costas, an old Greek who still lives in Plovdiv. While Albert meets his old friends, a lawyer working for the mafia does everything possible to take control of Albert's old family home...
Ivan Nichev is a graduate of the Lodz Film School and is foremost among Bulgarian directors. His film moves between past and present, against the background of beautiful and picturesque Plovdiv. After the End of the World is a call for humanity and love-not out of naivete or a misunderstanding of reality, but from a deep and sincere sadness. Eager to make a better living hustling on the mean streets of the Paris garment district, Vahe (Pascal Elbe) finds he may lose everything when he tries to negotiate a financial dispute between his ex-girlfriend's brother and the gang that smuggled him into the country. Talks break down, and with the threat of violence looming large, Vahe is forced to choose between competing loyalties.
The last time a French film exploded with such raw energy was when Mathieu Kassovitz debuted with La Haine in 1995. This is writer/director Frederic Balekdijan's first feature, also, and it uses the same neo-realistic style, with handheld cameras close in and on the streets. There isn't a whiff of falsehood, or evidence of a set designer's duster. Even the script has the rough-cut unpredictability of real life.
It deals with card sharks, street scams, petty crime, backed by an uglier, darker crowd of Armenian thugs. This is the Paris of immigrants, sweat shops, cafes and illegals. Chinese, North Africans, Eastern European gangsters coexist in a barely sustainable truce. Sooner or later a spark will ignite the tinderbox and someone will be killed. Followed by revenge attacks. Followed by God knows what else. In this no-go, gendarmes are noticeable by their absence.

Vahe's Chinese girlfriend has just dropped him and he finds himself babysitting her teenage brother, not because he has to, but the kid can't speak the language, is hot headed and liable to do himself harm. Their relationship is a mixture of resentment and affection, which leads them into danger.
Stories and characters move swiftly. There is no conventional plot, only the time it takes to rip the lid off the powder keg and somehow survive. Or not.
Cliches and sentimentality die at this level. Neo-realism has an artistic integrity, aligned to good taste. Gamblers, like La Haine, breathes its own fumes in a place where there is no translation for words like "taste" and "art."

ZOZO depicts the physical and psychological journey of a ten year old boy. From a raging civil war in Beirut in which he loses all his family, to Sweden, an unknown country where he faces a complex and completely different type of society. Sweden does not become the paradise that Zozo has dreamt of. Zozo’s journey reminds us that there is a dramatic personal story behind every entry in the refugee statistics, stories containing often-unimaginable experiences.

Nazim (Sener Sen) is a teacher who left his native Istanbul to work at a school in a small Kurdish village in Turkey. After 15 years, Nazim retires from his work and returns home, only to find Istanbul is a very different place than it was when he went away.
Nazim reacquaints himself with several of his old friends, including fellow former academic Takoz (Sumer Tilmac), and when Nazim discovers he's going to have to wait several months before he can begin receiving pension payments, Takoz arranges for him to get a job as a cab driver.
As Nazim rides the streets of Istanbul's rougher neighborhoods at night, he makes friends with one of his regular fares, Dunya (Meltem Cumbul), an aspiring nightclub chanteuse. Dunya left her abusive husband, Halil (Timucin Esen), to make her way on her own, taking their young daughter with her, and Nazim feels protective toward the singer and her little girl.
However, Halil isn't about to leave his wife without a fight, and things become more difficult when Nazim becomes smitten with Dunya.

Giancarlo (Sergio Castellitto) is delighted when he has an opportunity to leave his provincial teaching job and drag his wife Agata (Margherita Buy) and 12-year old daughter Caterina (newcomer Alice Teghil) back to his old neighborhood in Rome.
Caterina is a sweet, naïve, and pretty girl, and on her first day of school, she finds herself mocked as a hick. Her classmates are the sons and daughters of Rome's elite. Margherita's (Carolina Iaquaniello) parents are prominent intellectuals, and she leads a faction of bohemian socialist kids, while Daniella's father is a political heavyweight, and her preppy clique dresses in designer duds and espouses right-wing politics.
Poor Caterina finds the two opposing factions battling over her allegiance, but every time she makes a new friend, her father fouls things up. Giancarlo, who is also an aspiring novelist, spends his evenings at home ranting about the elites and their devious, cliquish ways, but every time he's in the presence of an important person, he desperately tries to ingratiate himself and get his talents noticed.

Superhuman SteadyCam operator Tamas Nyerges shot 11:59 in a single, nine-minute take — setting a new record for European filmmaking.
Caspian Bride — A lonesome man takes a ride to a dump in search for usable things. Hidden under a lot of rubbish he finds an old mannequin. He takes her along to his hut, washes and clothes her and goes on a bike tour through the oil fields. When a group of children runs after him, he collides with a flock of sheep. The mannequin sinks in a puddle of oil. But at that moment he encounters his true love.
Tragic Story with Happy Ending — A little girl whose heart beat more quickly and louder than other people felt compelled to leave her house because she was disturbing her neighbours. She decided however to return to her home and she began noticing that little by little people got used to the beat of her heart…
League of Legends — This film is really just an excuse to show off the skills of its stars. And they are immensely talented, with quite magical skill.
A simple premise, perhaps inspired by TV adverts also starring Edgar Davids, but ultimately too simple, inadequately explored. I wanted more from the film than just showing off the talents of the cast. Those talents would be better served as half-time entertainment in the final of a major tournament.
There is minimal dialogue in the film; there's minimal acting really too. This sparsity helps focus on the skills on display; regrettably it also highlights how little happens in this short film.
Watch it anyway - or fly to Holland and seek out these people. They are something to behold.

As a result the Mozart Minutes represent an impressive cross section of the kind of films produced in Austria and a multifacetted sampler of formal and ontextual views of Mozart and his influence on modern society, art and culture.

Operatically extended for its subject matter, this is a visually arresting yet cumulatively wearying morality play in which a German soldier and his partisan prisoner wander a snowy landscape near World War II's end.
Story is based on the autobiographical novel by partisan fighter Leopold Arje Friedmann, who wrote under the pen name "Leopold Lahola" and was active in 1960's Prague Spring lensing revival prior to his sudden 1968 death.
Pic's first half finds the soldier (Alexander Barta) being grilled by an incredulous Russian commissar (Boris Farkas), who demands over and over again to know how the grunt escaped. Second half illustrates the standoff, as German trooper Kampen (co-scripter Marko Igonda) debates the conflict with his prisoner in rugged, snowbound terrain.
Extended finale underscores the allegorical nature of the proceedings.
"To kill is the biggest offense," one says, underscoring the philosophical debate. Tech package is impressively eccentric, though arduous location work is undermined by claustrophobic close-ups and repetitive antiwar themes. [by Eddie Cockrell]

The action unfolds between 9 May 1950, the day of Robert Schuman's declaration, and 10 August 1952, when Jean Monnet was appointed president of the European coal and steel community's governing body, the forerunner of today's EU. It was also the wedding day of Marie and Jürgen, a young Franco-German couple.
The film adroitly mixes fact (Jean Monnet, Robert Schuman, Konrad Adenauer, etc.) and fiction (Marie, Jürgen, their families and friends). The constant interplay between these two aspects mirrors the difficulties at that time of overcoming the obstacles to reconciliation between the two European nations.
Dealing with the birth of modern Europe, the film shows us the extent of the struggle by men and women on either side of the Rhine that led to the peace and freedom we enjoy today.

Kid, a 15-year-old hard laborer, steals a map that promises to reveal the location of the notorious pirate Black Mor's treasure.
I was pleasantly surprised to watch such a good french animation movie this year. Unfortunately it looks like it hasn't got the audience it deserved. I think that's because it's completely different from what the french have been making lately. First, on technical terms ( rather dark flat tints with no shades) and then, from the story line (a mere pirate story without much action, but interesting though).
The hero, called "the kid", is struggling with problems and doubts any teenager has, and that is precisely what the movie is focusing on. Thus, too young children will not be able to understand everything. Actually i have been glad to watch, at last, a french animated film meant for people over 7! This is rare enough to be noticed, and that is why i advise everyone to take a look at it, whether they like "les triplettes" (which i found ridiculous and pathetically slow...) and "kirikou" or not. - Dhomochevsky from france [picture: Cinebel.be]

There isn't a whiff of falsehood, or evidence of a set designer's duster. Even the script has the rough-cut unpredictability of real life.
It deals with card sharks, street scams, petty crime, backed by an uglier, darker crowd of Armenian thugs. This is the Paris of immigrants, sweat shops, cafes and illegals. Chinese, North Africans, Eastern European gangsters coexist in a barely sustainable truce. Sooner or later a spark will ignite the tinderbox and someone will be killed. Followed by revenge attacks. Followed by God knows what else. In this no-go, gendarmes are noticeable by their absence.

Vahe's Chinese girlfriend has just dropped him and he finds himself babysitting her teenage brother, not because he has to, but the kid can't speak the language, is hot headed and liable to do himself harm. Their relationship is a mixture of resentment and affection, which leads them into danger.
Stories and characters move swiftly. There is no conventional plot, only the time it takes to rip the lid off the powder keg and somehow survive. Or not.
Cliches and sentimentality die at this level. Neo-realism has an artistic integrity, aligned to good taste. Gamblers, like La Haine, breathes its own fumes in a place where there is no translation for words like "taste" and "art."

Fanny Ebner (Nina Proll) is 18 and beautiful when she meets Ma Yunlong (Wang Zhiwen), and soon the two are madly in love.
Fanny defies her friends and family by following her lover to China, where they are married, but their happiness is attenuated by the onset of political strife, and Yunlong is captured and sent to a prison camp.

Nazim (Sener Sen) is a teacher who left his native Istanbul to work at a school in a small Kurdish village in Turkey. After 15 years, Nazim retires from his work and returns home, only to find Istanbul is a very different place than it was when he went away.
Nazim reacquaints himself with several of his old friends, including fellow former academic Takoz (Sumer Tilmac), and when Nazim discovers he's going to have to wait several months before he can begin receiving pension payments, Takoz arranges for him to get a job as a cab driver.
As Nazim rides the streets of Istanbul's rougher neighborhoods at night, he makes friends with one of his regular fares, Dunya (Meltem Cumbul), an aspiring nightclub chanteuse. Dunya left her abusive husband, Halil (Timucin Esen), to make her way on her own, taking their young daughter with her, and Nazim feels protective toward the singer and her little girl.
However, Halil isn't about to leave his wife without a fight, and things become more difficult when Nazim becomes smitten with Dunya.

Kid, a 15-year-old hard laborer, steals a map that promises to reveal the location of the notorious pirate Black Mor's treasure.
I was pleasantly surprised to watch such a good french animation movie this year. Unfortunately it looks like it hasn't got the audience it deserved. I think that's because it's completely different from what the french have been making lately. First, on technical terms ( rather dark flat tints with no shades) and then, from the story line (a mere pirate story without much action, but interesting though).
The hero, called "the kid", is struggling with problems and doubts any teenager has, and that is precisely what the movie is focusing on. Thus, too young children will not be able to understand everything. Actually i have been glad to watch, at last, a french animated film meant for people over 7! This is rare enough to be noticed, and that is why i advise everyone to take a look at it, whether they like "les triplettes" (which i found ridiculous and pathetically slow...) and "kirikou" or not. - Dhomochevsky from france [picture: Cinebel.be]
